Hyrox Vs Crossfit: What's The Difference?

Although it’s been around since 2017, Hyrox has seen a huge spike in popularity over the last year. As this fitness event continues to go mainstream, some confusion has popped up around what exactly Hyrox is and how it differs from CrossFit.
But first, is Hyrox CrossFit?
Nope – Hyrox isn’t the same as CrossFit. While there are a few similarities between the two, there are plenty of differences when it comes to the workouts, exercises, and overall concepts.
What is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a fitness competition that combines running with eight different workout exercises. It was created to test and challenge overall fitness, including strength, speed, power, and endurance – all while being accessible to any fitness level.
In a Hyrox event, participants alternate between running 1km and doing a functional workout for eight rounds. The exercises in a Hyrox event include:
- SkiErg
- Sled Push
- Sled Pull
- Burpee Broad Jumps
- Rowing
- Farmer's Carry
- Sandbag Lunges
- Wall Balls
CrossFit Vs Hyrox: The Differences
There are a few key differences between Hyrox and CrossFit:
Consistency of Workouts: All Hyrox events follow the same format with the exact same exercises, while CrossFit workouts and competitions can vary in both exercises and structure.
Level of Complexity: Hyrox exercises, though challenging, are straightforward and suitable for all fitness levels. On the other hand, CrossFit often includes complex Olympic lifts and gymnastic movements that require advanced strength and technical skills.
Types of Workouts: CrossFit workouts tend to be shorter and higher in intensity, while Hyrox focuses more on endurance.
Similarities Between Hyrox And CrossFit
While the two training styles are different, it's easy to see why people might think they're the same if they're not familiar with CrossFit or Hyrox. Both offer global competitions that challenge people to push their strength and fitness, and the friendly yet competitive vibe is a big draw for both Hyrox and CrossFit. Although the competitions have their differences, participants will enjoy competing in both and connecting with others who share the same passion.
How To Know If CrossFit Or Hyrox Is Right For You
If you enjoy running, have endurance-based goals, or are new to working out, Hyrox is probably a better fit, and we'd recommend starting there.
If you have more technical gym experience and enjoy high-intensity workouts, CrossFit might be a better match for you.
That said, you don’t have to pick just one. Both CrossFit and Hyrox offer fun, competitive workouts, and a lot of people enjoy trying both!
